A Little About Mr. Fred Schafer

1. What do you like about teaching at St. Alexander?

I am dedicated to Catholic education and feel that our school has the most up-to-date curriculum. This is why I am so enthusiastic about the Applied Tech program. We are the only school in the Archdiocese of Chicago to have such an innovative program. I willingly spend many extra hours preparing for the 16 modules that I facilitate each class period.

2. Why have you chosen to teach in the Catholic Schools?

I received my elementary and high school education at St. Rita in Chicago. My education continued at St. Ambrose in Davenport, and I earned my Master Degree from St. Xavier in Oak Lawn. My own children attended St. Alexander School, as well as Mother McAuley and Brother Rice. Catholic education lays the foundation for our faith and character.

3. Favorite teaching moment?

My favorite teaching moment happens every class period when a student feels successful. The Applied Tech program offers every student that opportunity when they put forth the effort. The Applied Tech motto is: “Success In Every Way, Every Day”.

4. When did you know that you wanted to be a teacher?

When I was attending St. Rita High School I knew that working in education was my goal. I had such great role models and I wanted to follow in their footsteps. I was encouraged by my mother and grandmother, both of whom were teachers.
